Michael Smith: Selected Videos, 1980-2005 surveys over 25 years of Smith??™s videos which initially emerged at a crossroad between 1970s performance art and 1980s late-night cable television. Starring himself as the inimitable ???Mike???, Smith??™s works are deadpan exposures of utterly bland realities and misguided materialism, that ape the claustrophobic, domestic world of the sit-com or sketch comedy show, but instead of real challenges, Mike??™s tasks are of the most banal sort: laundry, to-do lists, getting ready for a party, or responding to his mail.

Michael Smith will be joined by Jay Sanders for a post-screening discussion.

As part of Anthology??™s ongoing series Personal Archive, artist Michael Smith and curator Jay Sanders will screen a selection of rare performance documentation and artist??™s videos from their personal collections.

PERFORMA presents a retrospective of Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975) who disappeared at sea in the mid 1970s. Documented in film and photography, Bas Jan Ader??™s interest in failures, falls, and breakdowns offers a uniquely melodramatic and fragile form of performance art. This rare screening of a collection of his films includes I??™m Too Sad To Tell You (1971); Fall II, Amsterdam (1970), among others.

Dutch film-maker Rene Daalder presents his work in progress Here is Always Somewhere Else, a documentary on the life, death and influence of Bas Jan Ader. Daalder??™s film features the work of artists who have long expressed a fascination for Bas Jan Ader??™s work, including Charles Ray, Richard Serra, Tacita Dean, Marcel Broodthaers, Ger van Elk, Pipilotti Rist, and Rodney Graham among others. Along with never-before seen footage of Ader, interviews, and documentation, Rene Daalder reveals a complex portrait of Ader??™s work and his lasting legacy. He attempts to shed light on Ader??™s last work, his Search for the Miraculous, in which he disappeared at sea.

Performance

Ei Arakawa, Jutta Koether, Emily Sundblad are brought together by curator Jay Sanders for a collaborative extravaganza within Anthology’s Courthouse Theater. Three of New York’s most provocative young artists invoke a shaky, shared vision of
‘the cinema,’ projecting its possibilities onto every available surface. Grand Openings will be an evening of overlapping actions activating the invisible expanse between the seats and the screen, and erasing all notions of what is supposed to happen in a movie theater.

Programs are organized by Jay Sanders for PERFORMA05, with Andrew Lampert of Anthology Archives.
