As the second artwork supported by Art in General’s new commissions program,? Sharon Hayes will stage ten simulated protests throughout New York City from November 1 – November 9. This series of protests initiates? the work, in the near future,? which will continue through 2006. Each of these events will be documented by the attending audience. As part of PERFORMA05, on November 9,? Hayes will present this documentation in a performance-based presentation from 6-8 pm at Art in General.
MORE ABOUT HAYES’ WORK:In nine separate actions taking place November 1-9, 2006 at various locations throughout New York City, artist Sharon Hayes will stand on the street with a sign. These actions are the first iterations of Sharon’s new project, In the Near Future, which investigates the meaning and methods of protests and simulations of impending events. While the passers-by may become the general public of these actions, a second aspect of this iteration of In the Near Future invites another, more specific public to both witness and document the action. We are asking this public to document in a medium that can be projected, e.g. slide photography, digital photography, or digital and/or analog video. This documentation will be shown in an informal presentation on November 9, 6-8 p.m. at Art in General.
Schedule and locations of the actions are:After the documentation, people are expected to either leave the used film(s) directly with Sharon on location or deliver it to Art in General before November 9th. Art in General will take care of the film processing. If you or your group chooses to shoot with a digital camera, those pictures can be emailed to artingeneral@gmail.com. If people would like to be credited for your/their work, they should include the name(s) in the email or with the used film.
After Before by Sharon Hayes, another, newly commissioned work by Art in General is on exhibition at the gallery until December 17, 2005.
