PRESENTATIONS/ CO-PRESENTATIONS

PERFORMA05 has been curated by a consortium of independent organizers and curators at New York's leading arts organizations. Each curator was invited to propose a program especially for PERFORMA05 that focused on performance by visual artists. Proposals were reviewed by PERFORMA's director and curatorial team, with the goal of providing a broad spectrum of opinion on contemporary performance in the visual arts. Some venues invited additional proposals from independent curators. With a total of 98 artists at more than 20 venues, PERFORMA05 reflects the selection of fourteen active curators.

For PERFORMA05 Parisian multimedia artist Melik Ohanian will launch his book Cosmograms, in an event comprised of two parts, one public and one private. The idea for Cosmograms originated from Ohanian??ôs seven-screen film projection Seven Minutes Before presented at the Sao Paolo Biennale (2004), in which one narrative was screened from seven different views. Each screen started from the same starting point and each culminated in the explosion of a camper van in the Vercors Mountains. Like a series of shockwaves emanating from the explosion, the publication Cosmograms (Lukas&Sternberg, New York, 2005) brings together a series of 22 interviews, that takes Ohanian??ôs film as their starting point. Edited by Ohanian and French writer Jean-Christophe Royoux, contributors from varied fields include Beatriz Colomina, Professor of Architecture at the University of Princeton; David Elbaz, an astrophysicist; Richard Drayton, a lecturer in Extra-European History since 1500 at the University of Cambridge; and Tacita Dean, a Berlin-based artist.

The public event and book launch of Cosmograms is an exploration with the authors, beginning with a meeting point and arriving at an unspecified location, where the book will await the audience and authors, for informal presentations and discussion. In opposition to the shared moments forming the public event, the separate private event consists of a secret meeting, of a secret purpose, solely for the book contributors.
