PRESENTATIONS/ CO-PRESENTATIONS

PERFORMA05 has been curated by a consortium of independent organizers and curators at New York's leading arts organizations. Each curator was invited to propose a program especially for PERFORMA05 that focused on performance by visual artists. Proposals were reviewed by PERFORMA's director and curatorial team, with the goal of providing a broad spectrum of opinion on contemporary performance in the visual arts. Some venues invited additional proposals from independent curators. With a total of 98 artists at more than 20 venues, PERFORMA05 reflects the selection of fourteen active curators.

Lecture presentations by Coco Fusco and Bernar Venet

Ever since the Futurist Filippo Tomaso Marinetti created his Futurist ???serate??? in 1909, in which he ???declaimed?? the Futurist manifesto, many artists have used the lecture format as a staging device to communicate radical ideas about art and politics directly to audiences.

PERFORMA responds to the widespread contemporary interest in the lecture form as performance, with a recreation from the sixties, of a Conceptual Art performance by Bernar Venet and a new work by Coco Fusco from 2005.

Venet??s Neutron emission from muon capture in Ca40 was first presented at The Judson Church Theater in New York in 1968, and will be re-worked as Astrophysics with High Energy Light. Coco Fusco??s A Room of One??s Own (2005) is a remarkable window onto special training sessions for women to learn interrogation techniques. Bush??s ???War on Terror?? leads Fusco to a training camp where she and five women undergo a course in interrogation, conducted by former U.S. military.

Curated by PERFORMA and presented as part of the PERFORMA05 Biennial.
