YOKO ONO

Yoko Ono was born in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan, and currently lives in New York. With her career beginning with the Fluxus movement, Ono drifted from New York City to Japan to London, where she was a part of the infamous 1966 Indica Gallery show. During her relationship with John Lennon, they collaborated on many projects, releasing albums such as Unfinished Music for Two Virgins (1968) and Double Fantasy in (1980). Ono??ôs iconic performance works of the 1960s, such as Cut Piece (1964), were works she often revisited in the 1980s, revising it to fit the decade very much influenced by wealth and materialism. As well as performance Ono has made films, sculpture, installation and photography and her work is displayed in galleries throughout the world, and she is one of the most well known performance artists of our time. She has been the recipient of many awards including the Japan Foundation of New York??ôs Lifetime Achievement Award (2005), an honorary Doctorate in Fine Art from Bard College (2002), and an honorary degree from Liverpool University, UK (2001).
