TROY RICHARDS

New York-based Troy Richards received his M.F.A. from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Richards works in multimedia, originally a painter, he started to paint within time frame of performance: painting on balloons that would wither down, or on freezer paper, from which the sheets of paint would be removed and placed in temporary positions direct in the exhibition space. In his more figurative work, Richards takes his subjects from popular culture, comics, and iconic generic characters such as cowboys, making vast pneumatic sculptures that squash into or spill out of galleries. His work has been exhibited at Borowsky Gallery in Philadelphia; the Delaware Art Museum; the Duncan and Miller Gallery in Washington, D.C.; the Bronx Museum of Arts, Longwood Art Center, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Socrates Sculpture Park, White Columns, and LFL Gallery, all in New York.
