JAMIE ISENSTEIN

New York artist Jamie Isenstein received her MFA from Columbia University, New York (2004) and her BA from Reed College, Portland (1998). Working in painting, drawing, installation, video and performance, Isenstein’s work wittily focuses on the small and peculiar, humorously disrupting the expected norm, such as motorising a clock to run continuously in her ‘we will be back at.’ sign. For the Greater New York Show at PS1, Isenstein’s illuminated alcove in Magic Fingers, contained not, as first glance would assume, a fake hand, but the artists own hand, moving fractionally and very much belonging to a person hidden away behind the wall. In 2004 she had a solo show, Infinite Invisible Soft-shoe, Guild and Greyshkul, New York, and other group shows include Greater New York, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, as well as D’Amelio Terras, Andrew Kreps Gallery, LeRoy Neiman Gallery, all in New York; Savage Art Resources, Oregon Jewish Museum, LaLuna Performance Space, Blackfish Gallery, and Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, all in Portland; Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch, Berlin, Germany; and Kunsthochschule, Kassel, Germany; She has been awarded an Agnes Martin Fellowship Award (2003), an Arthur B. Davis Foundation Research Grant (1997-1998), and a Festiva Arts Scholarship (1994).
