JACK SMITH
at Tongue Press

Jack Smith (1932-1989) was one of the most influential American underground artists of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, working as a filmmaker, performance artist and photographer. Smith was obsessed by the magic of early Hollywood movies, and his own idiosyncratic work contained a deceptively frivolous camp aesthetic, which he used to aim for an ???aesthetic delirium.??ô Smith??ôs most famous film Flaming Creatures (1961) was an explicit, exotic romp, fulfilling Smith??ôs luscious filmmaking fantasies, filled with maidens, vampires, drag queens and other vivid characters. As Smith began to perform live he included his films and slides, creating his ???expanded cinema,??? where he would edit films live creating unique outcomes every time. Smith??ôs work is currently being revisited and his lost and damaged films are being rediscovered and restored.
