BANKS VIOLETTE

New York-based artist Banks Violette is a painter and sculptor, who renders the social landscape in which we live, especially the darker, violent corners of American culture. Violette??ôs subjects are solemn and disturbing cases of horrific teenage murders and the idols and obsessions of his young criminals, which he portrays through slick black sculptural surfaces, twisted metal thorns, spikes and skulls, and a number of other heavily appropriated signifiers of the social groups that the work is based upon. Born in 1973 in New York, Banks received his MFA from Columbia (2000), and his B.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts (1998). He has shown with Team Gallery, Mitchell Algus Gallery and The Whitney Museum of American Art amongst others in New York, and has a forthcoming solo show in London, as well as previous group shows in Switzerland, Brussels, Frankfurt and Vienna amongst others.
